TPF and the 2019 CrossFit Open

The CrossFit Open is upon us. In 30 days the first of 5 unknown workouts will be released and what is known as “Crossfit Christmas” will have officially begun. For those who are seasoned CrossFit veterans you know The Open is a wonderful time of year that can create and bring back back plenty of memories. Whether you’ve competed in one Open or every single one since 2011 you know that just those two little words will make you push harder, go faster and accomlish things you might never have had the courage to try in the first place. On the other hand I’m sure there are plenty of you who might be wondering “what is The Open?”

.
The Crossfit Games Open consists of 5 workouts released on 5 Thursday nights in consecutive weeks. The workouts are done at TPF and submitted to a live worldwide scoreboard by Monday night at 8pm. These workouts are a little different than normal TPF workouts, most noteably because we have no idea what they will be until they are released worldwide on Thursday night. Another somewhat unique addition to these workouts is having your very own judge. This judge will either be a TPF coach or member and will count your reps as well as hold you accountable for range of motion standards. The movements you will see in an Open workout are the same movements you will see in an everyday TPF workout, including higher level gymnastics and heavy weights. Have no fear however, each workout is released with both Rx and Scaled versions so everyone will have a workout to complete regardless of their fitness or experience level, including Masters divisions for 35+ goign in increments of 5 years ending with a 60+ division. One thing to note: outside of the standards that are released for the scaled version of each workout we are going to try as hard as possible to not scale down a workout further.

In years past we have done the Open workout as our Friday workout of the day and then had repeats or makeup workouts at some point over the weekend, that will change this year. The announced Open workout will now be done Monday as our class workout, however your first chance to complete the workout will be Friday night during the 5:30pm class, this will be our Friday Night Lights. For those who want to be effectively judged and scored this is the time where you should complete the workout if you are able. We will start at 5:30 with an overview of the workout and how it will be setup, judged and what movement standards we are looking for. We will also go over a few tips and strategies that might be useful. After our talk you will have a chance to pair up with a judge and decide when you want to go as well as to warm up. We will run heats of the workout until everyone who wants to participate and be judged has finished. Each Friday night will have some sort of theme where you can dress up, bring a treat to share and show off your creativity for a chance to win a prize. Dressing up and sharing treats isn’t required, but we like to have fun so it is highly encouraged! For those who can’t make Friday night and who want to be judged your other opportunity will be Sunday during open gym. Monday during class will be on an as needed basis as there will be normal parts A and B programming and there may or may not be anyone available to be a judge for you. Keep in mind if you want to legitimatly post your score you need to have a judge for your workout.

The Open is a worldwide competition and is available to everyone who wants to participate‚Ķ and its FUN! It includes professional fitnessers, soccer moms, average joes, former professional athletes, grandmas, grandpas and teenagers – it also should include you. Whether you’ve been crossfitting for 6 months or 6 years you’ll never experience a workout quite the same as you will during The Open. You might not think that some random workout posted on the internet for the world to try would have such a profound effect on a group of people, but believe me it can. Something about a scoreboard and your very best effort being on display for the world to see makes you push just a little harder and makes you dig for those last couple of reps. I encourage each and every person to sign up and compete, I promise you will be happy you did.
